RIM announces PlayBook 2.0 Developer Beta and Runtime, marries Android to BlackBerry

Research in Motion announced the developer beta of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 today at its annual DevCon event. The new beta will be released today, and has a few goodies that we’ve been waiting a long time for: namely, BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps and the BlackBerry Plug-In for Android Development Tools, which will give developers the opportunity to bring their Android apps to the PlayBook. Also coming along for the ride is support for Adobe AIR 3, Flash Player 11 and WebGL, a new tech that enables hardware-accelerated 3D graphics to show in the browser without needing additional software. Needless to say, this changes the ballgame a bit for Waterloo. Sounds great, but is it enough to keep the company’s head above water? Remains to be seen, but check out the press release after the break to get the full scoop, and head over to the Runtime site to get started.

Lean Mean Green Machine, a Titanic, Terrifying Toddler?s Trike

This behemoth is called the Lean Mean Green Machine, and just about the only green thing about this oversized big-wheel copy is its color — it’s powered by a Harley Davidson Evolution V-twin engine, for instance, and not burning the energy of a child hopped up on sugar.

Hori Tactical Assault Commander 3 PS3 keyboard and mouse: for fans of butch peripherals

Peripheral makers often give their devices preposterous names — remember when you asked your grandparents for that Thrustmaster? Hori has outdone itself with the Tactical Assault Commander 3, which won’t allow you to command any sort of tactical assault outside of your PS3. Admittedly, when you settle down in front of the TV, you’ll see it’s got some pretty useful features. There’s adjustable mouse sensitivity and a re-mappable keyboard that remembers your settings after the PS3 powers down. You also get a dedicated walk button to slow your movement, like the gentle tilt of an analog stick. It’s available starting October 24th in black or the Best Buy exclusive digital camouflage edition you see above — but it’ll cost you the same $100 whatever style you go for.

Droid RAZR vs. Droid vs. iPhone 4… fight!

Just how thin is 7.1mm? Well, we could tell you (been there, done that), or we can show you. And what better way to really drive the point home than with some head-to-head shots? We busted out our trusty iPhone 4 and the lead brick that is the first-generation Motorola Droid for good measure. And heck, we had the LG Marquee and Droid Incredible 2 floating around, so we threw those into the mix, as well. So, who’s the thinnest of them all? Find out in the gallery below.

Women 2.0: Number Of Women Founders Doubled Over Past Three Years

women2_logoWomen 2.0, an organization whose goal is to increase the number of female founders in technology startups, is sharing some good news today: the number of women starting companies has doubled over the past three years. The new data comes from a survey of its own community, which includes everyone from actual founders and co-founders to aspiring entrepreneurs. Back in 2008, Women 2.0 ran the same audience survey and found that 25% of its community were women founders. Today, more than 50% of its audience can now say the same.

HTML5 MP3 player lets you listen to your music library inside your browser

html5 browser mp3 audio player
While this slick little HTML5 audio player might not pack all of the features of your favorite desktop media application, it’s still a very cool demonstration of what a Web app can do with access to local resources — like MP3 and OGG files.

Just fire up http://antimatter15.github.com/player/player.html in your HTML5-compatible browser and browse to the topmost folder in your music library. The app will quickly build an index of all your tunes and let you start listening right inside your Web browser. Click on the filter library text, and you can enter a search string — results load as you type.

There’s a volume control, shuffle mode, play/pause control, and you can click and drag to skip forward or rewind during playback. As OMG! Ubuntu points out, you can even save the app to your hard drive and run it offline, which is pretty darn cool.

Not all browsers are equal when it comes to HTML5 implementation, of course. We found that Chrome worked the best, and Firefox was OK. It’s also worth noting that this music player comes from the same developer that created one of our favorite restartless Firefox 4 add-ons, drag2up.

Skype / Rdio co-founder’s Vdio service leaks out, pronunciation confirmed

Where does one go after Rdio? Why, Vdio, of course. GigaOm today got some answers about Skype / Rdio / KaZaA co-founder Janus Friis’s upcoming service. First and most foremost, it’s pronounced “Vee-dee-o.” The service is in closed beta at the moment, and will be first made available in the UK. The service will let users watch TV shows and movies — beyond that, we don’t know much, though the company assures us all that it “think[s] people will love using Vdio.” Fair enough. At present, the service’s homepage is cycling through shots of films like A Clockwork Orange and Ghostbusters and TV shows like Justified and Breaking Bad. Not too shabby.

Samsung delivers kernel source for T-Mobile Galaxy S II, developers can now collect all three

Developers, start your engines. T-Mobile’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S II was the slowest in the family to get the official kernel source. It’s here now, though, arriving on Sammy’s site a whole four days after the phone’s release; this isn’t an eternity by any means, but its counterparts had the source available no later than the actual launch date. No matter the reason, make your way to Samsung’s official site to dive in and make some magic happen.

hyper-vbackupbeta

This one’s for the sysadmins in the audience: Altaro, makers of our favorite “time machine for Windows” back solution, OopsBackup, have just announced a new product entering beta called Hyper-V Backup.

It’s a backup solution for virtual machines running on Microsoft’s Hyper-V virtualization solution. If that sentence just seemed like a bunch of buzzwords crammed together, Hyper-V backup is not for you. But, if you actually use Hyper-V and are hankering for a good backup solution, Altaro might be worth checking out.

The beta run is limited – Altaro are looking for just 250 testers. All participants will get a free license key to the final, production version. So if you’re interested in helping test Hyper-V Backup, get yourself over to Altaro now and join the beta.

How would you change HP’s TouchPad?

Not like it matters much now, but hey — why not, right? HP’s TouchPad was tossed into the closeout bin just over 40 days after it initially went on sale, and it actually served to be a spark for the eventual webOS fire that still seems to be smoldering. When we tested it — and before we knew HP was about to demolish its operating system in the consumer realm — we found tons of promise. That said, we also found lackluster hardware and a relatively barren application store, but we held out hope that the latter would blossom. These days, our readers are using fire sale TouchPads for all manners of tasks, but if you had the chance, how would you change yours? Toss in a different CPU / GPU? Give webOS the overhaul HP never did? Swap Touchstone for Qi? Let us know in comments below — those who need to hear, will.

Chrome 11 beta adds new experimental APIs for proxies, Web navigation

google chrome 11 proxy
Google Chrome 11 — which just recently made the move to the browser’s beta channel — has received a minor update that gives developers access to two new APIs.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second — Web Navigation Extension — is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions — like Traffic Light — to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you’ll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we’re not aware of any examples just yet, however. We’ll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

Transformers Blu-ray 3D release coming to Japan in January, still no release date for US

The United States got a quickie Blu-ray release of Transformers: Dark of the Moon a couple of weeks ago sans-extras and 3D, with only a promise they would be delivered “in the coming months” but that is not the case across the Pacific. In Japan Paramount has announced the Blu-ray 3D version is coming January 20th complete with English and Japanese soundtracks. There’s still no date for a full-fledged release around these parts, so if you’re an early adopter (if you have a 3D TV, it’s a pretty safe bet) your first chance to bring the billion dollar blockbuster home as Michael Bay intended may come with some extra kanji on it.

Jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 on OS X or Windows with PwnageTool or Sn0wbreeze

iOS 4.3.1 jailbreakA jailbreak of iOS 4.3.1 is now possible with both PwnageTool on Mac, and Sn0wbreeze on Windows. RedmondPie — who else? — has some handy guides that you can follow for all iOS 4.3.1 devices on Windows, for iPhone 4 on OS X, iPad 1 on OS X, iPhone 3GS on OS X, and iPod touch 4G and 3G on OS X.

All iOS 4.3.1 jailbreaks are still tethered, meaning you’ll have to jailbreak your device after every reboot. An untethered jailbreak is slated for release sometime in the next week — but 4.3 was meant to have an untether, too, and that never emerged.

Maybe Apple’s updated security mechanisms will finally keep hackers at bay!

Sprint Epic 4G Touch user makes a Lego stand with a twist [from the forums]

Yeah, that's awesome

We've seen some inspiring Lego stands people have made for their smartphones.  Legos are affordable, accessible, and fun as hell to play with (admit it) so they are the perfect building materials for all sorts of projects.  This one, for the Sprint Epic 4G Touch, from AC member mlsanders83 takes the cake though.  It's simple. unobtrusive, and looks like a little tiny Android geek working on a giant sized Super AMOLED plus screen.  When asked what Lego kit was used ('cause who wouldn't want to make one of these) mlsanders83 said it was "some combination of a boat and a plane mostly. I'm sure there were some other parts thrown in there too though."  Hit the break to see a couple more pics, and if you'll excuse me, I have some Legos to go buy.

Developer does the math: only 3.4 million Honeycomb tablets in the wild?

Google’s rolling in the dough in no small part due to Android’s success in the smartphone market. When it comes to tablets? Eh, not so much. Intrepid developer Al Sutton figures that only 3.4 million Honeycomb devices are currently in use, which pales in comparison to the number of slates sold by the competition in Cupertino. He arrived at the figure using Google’s data — Larry Page said that there are 190 million Android devices out there on yesterday’s earnings call, and the Android Developers website shows that only 1.8 percent of ‘droids accessing the Android Market during a recent two week period were running Google’s tablet OS. Do the math, and that’s just 3.42 million tablets running Android 3.x. It’s hardly an official figure, but it does indicate that Android’s got its work cut out for it the tablet space. That Ice Cream Sandwich better be mighty tasty if the bots from Mountain View are going to grab a bigger chunk of the market.

Line Grapefruit is a tricky Flash “path” game

linegrapefruit

Okay, see that snaking line coming in from the right on the screenshot? That’s you. And see those large round circles? Those are supposedly grapefruits, only they won’t sit still – they keep moving up and down and cutting across your path. And if you touch one, you die!

That’s what you have to deal with in Line Grapefruit. But that’s not all – you’re also on a time limit. In fact, you have a very limited amount of time to make it through the “path” (for lack of a better word). You need to snake your way through the winding trail without touching anything. The good news is that a grapefruit only kills you if it touches the end of the line – once you’ve made it past the grapefruit, nothing happens if it crosses the path you’ve made.

This is not an easy game, but it’s quite unique – I can’t recall seeing another game quite like it.

Motorola teaser counts down to ICS event date, ends a few hours early (video)

Motorola just unleashed a countdown clock for its Daft Punk-esque tease: Faster. Thinner. Smarter. Stronger. We already knew the Spyder was on its way, but we noticed that the clock stops dangerously close to the Google / Samsung Ice Cream Sandwich event set for this Tuesday, missing the mark by only seven hours. We can’t say for sure that Motorola is trying get in on the Google magic, but if it wants to push its news during the same business day, it makes sense for them to reveal their goods ahead of the event’s 10pm showtime. The teaser’s epileptic flash of buzzword images doesn’t tell us much, but it ends with a speedy bullet smartly slicing through the event date. Hit the break to see for yourself, we’ll let you make your own connections between that date-slice happy bullet and the Droid HD’s alternate names.

Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers

hp google cloud print

HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you’re ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you’ve got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well — like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We’re curious, though — how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.

Canadian Rock Band Wants To Cash In On TeaParty.com Sale

teaDomain name marketplace Sedo this morning announced that Canadian rock band The Tea Party has decided to sell their domain name, TeaParty.com, exclusively at Sedo.com. With the 2012 election season approaching, the band – which actually broke up years ago – probably figured selling the domain name just might be very lucrative. iPhone 4S Release Draws Crowds, Lines, Agony, Ecstasy

Pre-orders for Apple’s iPhone 4S hit the 1 million mark quickly after they became available earlier this month, and the deluge swamped the websites of Apple and its retail partners. This week, hordes of people began queuing up outside stores, some camping out overnight, to get their hands on the device, which hit the shelves Friday.

Sprint says the iPhone 4S, 4 add up to its best ‘device family’ launch ever (Update: AT&T too)

After ignoring and teasing the iPhone, Sprint has its own Apple handsets to sell and apparently its customers have responded to the iPhone 4 and 4S. A press release just went out calling this Sprint’s “best ever day of sales in retail, web and telesales for a device family” — hopefully they double checked the numbers this time — in the company’s history, as of 1PM ET. Predictably, Sprint’s unlimited data pricing compared to other carriers is being credited for the (unspecified) new high water mark in sales. Check the release itself after the break for the rest of the victory lap, but we’ll wait for actual numbers before deciding on the big winner of today’s launch.

Update: AT&T just couldn’t let Sprint hog the moment, sending out its own missive claiming the company “activated a record number of iPhones on our network – and is on-track to double our previous record for activations on a single day”. It’s included after the break, and of course we’ll let you know when / if Verizon fires a few shots off in celebration.

Boxee Box adds music streaming from Spotify, just press play

Today the Boxee Box becomes the next media streamer in the US (after the WDTV Live and Live Hub) to add support for Spotify’s streaming music library. Assuming you have a premium subscription at the ready (free and unlimited passes won’t cut it, consider this the same as access on a smartphone) all you need do is log in and your personally curated selections from the company’s catalog of sounds is available in your home theater. We gave it a quick try on our own system and found it synced our favorites with no problem, however if you don’t have playlists set up there’s no way to search or pull in songs from different sources. Still, considering how difficult it is to throw a party with more than one participant around your laptop, this should be the perfect way to take your dubstep playlist to the big speakers. And maybe invite some other people.

IEE brings glasses-free 3D to the battlefield

In a war zone, having the right data is as important as the right bomb sniffing laser. IEE has melded its 4.8-inch 800 x 400 military data display with 3Ms autostereoscopic film so soldiers can see mission-critical data in three dimensions. The Preliminary Advanced Information device is designed to show accurate terrain maps, relay the picture from a drone camera or bring up the occasional blast of Monday Night Football.

NVIDIA intros 3D Vision 2 glasses with brighter field of view, comfier design

NVIDIA’s 3D Vision is impressive and all, but one trade-off you’ll have to accept when you put on those active shutter glasses is a markedly dimmer field of view than what you’d get if you settled for plain-Jane 2D gaming. Well, the outfit just unveiled the second generation of the technology — appropriately named 3D Vision 2 — and this go ’round it promises not to strain your vision quite so much. These shutter glasses have a lens that’s 20 percent larger, promising a brighter experience. As an added perk, the frames have been rejiggered to be lighter and more flexible so that you can comfortably wear headphones without pinching your lobes. As for the newest 3D Vision monitors and laptops, those panels promise reduced ghosting, as well as 120Hz 2D gaming. In tandem with today’s announcement, NVIDIA announced that a trio of products — the Toshiba Qosmio X770 / 775, Toshiba Satellite P770 / P775 and ASUS’s 27-inch VG278H 1080p monitor — will support now 3D Vision 2. If a new rig’s not in the cards, the company also assures us that these glasses will be backward compatible with older 3D Vision panels. Look for them this month in the form of either standalone frames ($99) or as part of a $149 kit. All those details and more in the PR tucked after the break.

Sony Ericsson posts lower Q3 profits, will shift ‘entire portfolio’ to smartphones in 2012

It’s been a rough couple of quarters for Sony Ericsson, but things are looking slightly rosier, according to its Q3 earnings report. Today, the company announced break even year-on-year results for the third quarter of 2011, blaming the outcome on lower profit margins and higher taxes, which rose from €12 million to €17 million over the course of a year. According to the report, net profits fell to zero this quarter after reaching €49 million ($67.26 million) during Q3 2010, while sales dropped to €1.59 billion ($2.18 billion) from €1.6 billion ($2.2 billion) last year. It’s not exactly an encouraging trend, but it’s certainly an improvement over the last quarter, when Sony Ericsson posted a net loss of €50 million. As far as its portfolio goes, the company says its Xperia smartphones now comprise 80 percent of all sales, with some 22 million handsets already shipped to consumers. President and CEO Bert Nordberg, meanwhile, confirmed that his company will focus on this market with even more intensity, next year: “We will continue to invest in the smartphone market, shifting the entire portfolio to smartphones during 2012.” You can dig through the numbers for yourself, in the full PR after the break.

O’Reilly helps Japan, offers entire e-book catalog for 50% off, today only

O’reilly make some of the best computer books in the world. They also sell them as DRM-free e-books in a bunch of formats, including PDFs and Mobi for Kindle.

They usually offer one “Deal of the Day”, which is a 50% discount code for a book chosen for that one day. But just for for today, they’ve created a discount code — DDJPN — that gives you a 50% discount on their entire catalog, and they give a part of the proceeds to aid Japan relief efforts.

So far they’ve raised over $60,000, and the day is still young. So if you’ve been recently hankering after some nerdy book (or three), now would be a great time to grab one.

Motorola Xoom Family Edition includes kid-friendly apps, will hit Best Buy Sunday for $379

Just a week after we received a tip that a mysterious big box retailer would be getting a kid-friendly flavor of Motorola’s Xoom tablet, Best Buy has come forth to make things official with the Xoom Family Edition. Everything seems to be in line with what we already knew, including the $40 software bundle — yes, yes Zoodles comes preloaded, as does Asphalt 6 and SIM City Deluxe. And after the kids are done playing, mom and dad can catch up on homework with Quickoffice Pro HD. The Android 3.1-powered tablet includes a rather modest 16GB of storage, and will run you $379 when it hits Best Buy stores on Sunday. Any questions? Jump past the break for the full Moto rundown.

Velocity Micro Cruz T408 review

It’s no secret that the market for Android tablets is crowded – and getting more so every day. Just ask Samsung, Acer, HTC, Huawei, Lenovo, Pandigital and, oh yes, Verticool. We could keep going, but you get the point: it’s a big market out there, one with wildly varying prices and features. And just recently a little company called Amazon made its move in a big way with the Kindle Fire, an Android-powered $199 portal to its corner of the cloud. The world’s largest online retailer clearly thinks competing on price is a way to stand out from the pack. Velocity Micro, maker of the 8-inch Cruz T408, wholeheartedly agrees. It’s coming to market with a $199 slate, hoping to capture some attention of its own. Can it succeed? Read on to find out.

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It’s still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple’s mobile platform. And it’s even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple’s tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you’re searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as “touch and decide,” Bing Voice Search is also built in — making it easy to start a query without using the iPad’s on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

Google finally pulls the plug on Buzz amid ‘fall sweep’

Before there was Google+ there was Google Buzz, the company’s big effort to stake a claim in the social networking space. That, of course, didn’t exactly work out for the search giant, and it even managed to spark some lawsuits and attract the eye of the FTC. Now Google has finally swept it under the rug in a bit of fall cleaning, stating in a blog post today that Google Buzz and the Buzz API will be shut down “in a few weeks,” and that it will now focus solely on Google+ instead. Also getting the axe is Jaiku, a social networking service that Google acquired in 2007, as well some of the social features on iGoogle, and the company’s Code Search service, which will officially be shut down along with its API on January 15th of next year. And, if that wasn’t enough, Google also confirmed that today’s the day that the Google Labs site will be shut down (its demise was announced this summer).

ChromeLite: experience the ASCII Web of yesteryear

ChromeLite ASCII extension

Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here’s your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn’t really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted — such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) — and some fun ASCII art, but that’s about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work — so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools’ joke — and indeed, an annoying ‘you can uninstall this!’ message appears at the top of every page — but we’re kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

Gargantuan SQL injection infects 3.8 million URLs, installs rogue antivirus

LizaMoon SQL injection rogue AV

Over the last few days, a mass SQL injection attack has been quickly gathering speed. Just three days ago only 28,000 URLs were affected, but at the time of writing, there could be up to 3.8 million infected URLs.

Websense
has a complete write up the attack, dubbed ‘LizaMoon,’ but here’s the basic gist: it looks like someone is exploiting a vulnerabilty (or vulnerabilities) in hundreds of thousands of websites running on Microsoft SQL Server 2003 and 2005. It’s not yet known whether this is a vulnerability in SQL Server, or simply a case of outdated, unmaintained, and easily-exploitable CMSes.

The attack takes the form of an SQL injection, which then inserts a link to a JavaScript file hosted on the attacker’s server. This is repeated over and over until every Web page in the SQL database has been infected — and considering 3.8 million URLs have been infected, you can see that this is a very easy, and automated, attack.

Fortunately, the JavaScript isn’t particularly malicious: it pops up a rogue AV program called Windows Stability Center, but that’s it. Better yet, the rogue antivirus is already recognized by a bunch of real antivirus suites, including Avast, Panda and Microsoft Security Essentials.

The real problem with SQL injection attacks is that there’s nothing we surfers can do about them. There will always be old and unmaintained websites, and thus SQL injections will remain one of the easiest and most lucrative tools of hackers and spammers alike. All you can do is keep your antivirus and anti-malware software up to date, and pray.

Toshiba introduces tiny enterprise hard drives with big speed and big storage

HDDYou’re probably laughing to yourself right now saying, “300GB? That’s not big storage.” But, hear us out. The oh-so memorably titled MK01GRRB and MK01GRRR are not your standard hard drives — these are enterprise-grade disks that spin at 15k RPM and fit in a 2.5-inch bay. Toshiba claims they’re the highest capacity 2.5-inch, 15k drives on the market, and we couldn’t dig up any evidence to the contrary. The 6Gb/s SAS connection makes sure businesses get the most they can out of those platters spinning at break neck speeds and the GRRR models include a self-encrypting feature. The two drives will start shipping in both 147 and 300GB sizes in Q1 of 2012, but pricing has yet to be announced. Check out the PR after the break for a few more details.

Update: Seagate wrote in to let us know that they had a similar drive at the same size, capacity and speed earlier this year. So, take that, Tosh.
